Job Summary

RIC is seeking a knowledgeable and experienced survey crew chief to lead operation of equipment, field data gathering practices, survey workflows, and application of mathematics in the field to accomplish survey projects.  An ideal candidate will supervise the survey operations in the field and must demonstrate enough responsibility and knowledge to operate independently.  This individual must be able to identify and report information that relates to boundary determination, construction issues, irregularities in previous work, or other factors that relate our surveying work.  In this position, the candidate is expected to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and maturity as a representative of the company on job sites.  We are seeking an individual who shares our passion for a high quality work product and enjoys a fast-paced work environment.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage daily activities and personnel of the survey team
  • Establish the project alignment with the project manager or project engineer
  • Ensure the field information is correct and accurately presented to the project engineer
  • Communicate with clients when necessary
  • Analyze survey controls (GPS and conventional)
  • Perform ALTA and topographic surveys
  • Prepare record of surveys, maps, plats and legal descriptions
  • Work from notes, sketches, maps and other materials to complete survey tasks with minimum supervision
  • Utilize technology on projects
  • Perform survey reroutes
  • Responsible for clear information and accurate field notes
  • Responsible for maintenance, repair and welfare of the equipment in the field including work vehicles



  • Minimum of 5 years crew chief experience
  • A valid driver’s license must be possessed and maintained
  • Proficient with data collectors and total stations
  • GPS/RTK experience
  • Ability to upload point data files and download survey layout information from AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Work effectively and professionally with internal team members
  • Organized and punctual
  • Ability to communicate effectively with multiple teams
  • Ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced work environment
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated
  • Must be physically able to perform tasks such as walking and standing throughout the day
  • Ability to work outside in any weather condition
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of equipment


Education Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • LS or proof of continued progress toward LS certification
  • Must have a solid understanding of algebra, trigonometry and geometry
